Excuses answered

Every reason you have for not cleaning, taken seriously and answered briefly.

I don't have time. Now what?

Use the ten-minute rule. Set a timer, clean until it rings, then stop. Automate what you can with a robot vacuum and a dishwasher.

Won't a robot vacuum get stuck on cables and socks?

Sometimes. Lift cables and socks before a run, or choose a model with obstacle avoidance.

Is a self-emptying dock worth it?

If you want zero-touch, yes. It reduces emptying to every few weeks, but replacement bags are an ongoing cost.

Does vinegar clean everything?

No. It can etch natural stone such as marble and granite, and it must never be mixed with bleach.

What is the one cloth to buy?

Microfibre. Wash without fabric softener and it lifts dust and grease with little more than water.

Is a dishwasher better than washing by hand?

Usually yes for water and energy. A widely cited 2004 University of Bonn study found dishwashers used less than careful hand washing.

How often should I wash my bedding?

Every week or two is a common recommendation.

Can I mix cleaning products?

No. Never mix bleach with ammonia or acids. The fumes are dangerous.

Are detergent pods and sheets worth it?

They remove measuring from the chore. Follow the pack instructions and keep pods away from children.

What if my housemate doesn't care?

Agree on a single minimum standard, such as an empty sink at bedtime, and run a shared ten-minute timer.
